Giliano is a macro site off Malapascua in the Philippines, about 15 minutes by boat to the north-east. There is one mooring line to descend. Most dives start on a sandy rubble bottom at 22 to 23 m (72 to 75 ft), and the listed maximum depth is 24 m.
Marine life on the sand. This is where the site earns its reputation. One dive produced five seahorses and a tiny pygmy seahorse found when ascending the wall. Sea urchins carry zebra crabs, small anemonefish sit among translucent shrimp, and two tiny sea moths were seen. A red frogfish was found on the sand and a large black one on the way up.
Shallower water. Coming up, you reach a plateau at about 15 m with pinkish soft corals that look like a field of wildflowers when visibility is good.
Diving it. Conditions are easy, but good buoyancy matters because the bottom looks derelict yet is full of life. Watch no-decompression limits, especially on a repeat dive. Some of the site is plain to look at, so an appreciation of macro helps.
