The Hydro Atlantic is a historic shipwreck lying 1.3 miles southeast of the Boca Inlet, off Pompano Beach/Boca Raton, Florida. Built in 1905 by Maryland Steel Corporation for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under the name Delaware, she changed hands and names several times — Sand Captain (1950), Ezra Sensibar (1961), and finally Hydro Atlantic after her 1968 sale to Hydromar Corporation. She was being towed to a Texas salvage yard when her aging hull gave out, sending her to the bottom on December 7, 1987.
The wreck sits upright in 173 feet (53 m) of water, with her deck at 145–150 feet (44–46 m) and one mast rising to 120 feet (37 m). The superstructure includes towering cranes, cargo holds, and a wheelhouse; one mast has fallen to the side while the twin masts over the wheelhouse remain erect. The hull is heavily encrusted with corals and sponges and densely populated with fish throughout.
Large amberjacks and other pelagic fish are regularly encountered on the wreck, and bull sharks are occasionally spotted in the distance. Jacks are also present among the marine life.
This is a boat dive, accessed from Pompano Beach or Boca Raton. Strong current is frequently present and should be expected. The shallowest point at 120 feet (37 m) makes the wreck technically reachable by advanced recreational divers, though with very limited bottom time; diving her as a technical diver allows 25–30 minutes or more on the wreck within a 60–75 minute total runtime. The site is rated as a technical dive requiring advanced experience and appropriate certification.
