Jardines (Spanish for "Gardens") is a shallow coral reef located close to the shore at Playa del Carmen, on Mexico's Riviera Maya. The short boat ride out makes it one of the most accessible reef dives in the area, and its maximum depth of 12 metres (40 feet) keeps it well within reach of newly certified divers or anyone wanting a gentle check-dive after a long journey.
The reef is built around vivid coral formations including tropical sponges and brain corals. Because the water is so shallow, red and orange coral colours remain saturated rather than being filtered out by depth, and light conditions are particularly good around midday.
Marine life at Jardines includes large schools of yellowtail snappers and grunts, and nurse sharks are occasionally found resting under ledges. Current is light and visibility is good, making it easy to move slowly and observe the reef at a comfortable pace.
With a maximum depth of 12.6 metres, light current, and good visibility, the site is well suited to beginner divers and anyone looking for a relaxed, unhurried dive. Its proximity to shore also keeps the surface transit short, which is welcome for those who are not yet fully comfortable on a boat.
