La Catedral is a boat-entry dive site located off the north coast of Gran Canaria, near Las Palmas, featuring dramatic volcanic rock formations that give the site its name — high arches, caverns, bóvedas, and caves of natural volcanic rock reaching around 20 metres in height, extending from roughly 6 metres down to a maximum of 40 metres depth. The formations evoke Gothic cathedral architecture, with light filtering through natural skylights to create a striking interplay of light and shadow, making it a popular site for underwater photography.
Entry is by boat, with a giant stride off the vessel and a reference line descent to the shallowest part of the structure, from where a guide leads divers through the most suitable route among the arches and cave passages. The site sits approximately forty minutes by boat from Playa del Inglés. On the outer wall, pelagic species including barracuda and amberjack are commonly encountered alongside the reef structure.
Marine life inside the formations includes large groupers, moray eels, snappers, octopus, lobsters, crabs, nudibranchs, and parrotfish, while shoals of barracuda and groupers are regularly seen around the site. Outside on the wall, amberjack and other pelagics are also sighted.
Conditions vary seasonally: summer visibility averages 30 metres or more, dropping to around 15 metres in winter; water temperature ranges from approximately 23 °C in summer to 18 °C in winter, with moderate currents possible. The northern exposure means the sea can be choppy, which may make boat handling and gearing up more demanding. The site requires a minimum certification of Advanced Open Water plus a Deep Diver specialty, and is suited to experienced divers comfortable with deeper dives near the recreational limit; the minimum age is 14.
