Mainit Point is a dive site at the tip of the Calumpan Peninsula in Anilao, where Batangas Bay begins. Its official geographic name is Cazador Point, and it is known as Mainit after a small hot spring on the shore. Depths run from 5 to 60 metres.
The Apex is a gradual slope that runs from the shore down to roughly 40 metres, then drops steeply past 70 metres. Three large rocky mounds sit at about 30 metres near the tip of the Apex. The shallows hold sea fans, hydroids, xenia, soft corals and hard corals, and the deeper slope is covered in dense soft corals.
Expect wrasses, snappers, anthias and groupers, with fish numbers reduced by overfishing but richer than at most Anilao sites. Oriental sweetlips gather in the shadows of the mounds and let divers come close. Schools of silvery chevron barracuda and the occasional blacktip shark of about 1.5 metres pass through the faster water outside the mounds, though the blacktips are becoming rarer.
Currents can be very strong, with down-currents near the Apex. If one catches you, swim away from the reef into open water rather than hugging the wall or fighting it. Wind-driven waves at the surface can make entry and exit difficult, so time your moves with the waves. The entry side changes with the season, and during Habagat it is from the east. The site is rated advanced.
