New Harbour is a sheltered shore dive in the cove at Blandford, Nova Scotia, rated novice. It is a working harbour that once held a whaling station near the mouth of the cove, which operated in the 1950s and 1960s and closed when Canada ended commercial whaling. The plant is gone and only a grassy hill remains.
Whale bones. Some whale bones can still be found in the cove. On the far side, directly opposite a pale blue fish shack, two skulls about 5 m long lie in 15 to 19 ft of water, with ribs, shoulder blades and a few vertebrae scattered about. The normally low visibility makes them hard to find.
There are steps down to the water, or you can giant stride off the wharf. The bottom is coarse sand with soft silt, shells and small pebbles, with isolated large boulders of dark shale covered in seaweed. Depth averages 10 to 20 ft (3 to 6 m), so you can spend plenty of time here.
Watch for boat traffic, and for the many ropes in an active fishing harbour. Visibility ranges from really good to very poor.
