The Potteries is a reef about 12 metres deep covered in hundreds of ancient Greek amphoras, probably once holding wine or olive oil. How they came to be scattered over the sea bed is unknown, and one theory is an ancient merchant ship wreck. Removing or photographing the amphorae is strictly forbidden by Greek law.
The dive is very easy, with light current, and is best kept to a maximum of 12 metres, because beyond that the reef gives way to sand. Stay shallow and look for octopus and scorpion fish hiding in the rocks.
Marine life includes the shy red and white striped squirrelfish, found under a single rock ledge on the reef, plus shoaling sea bream and colourful wrasse. It is the closest site to a nearby fish farm, which can sometimes bring a few surprises.
