Punta de La Sal, also known as The Gorgonia, is a deep dive site within the El Cabrón Marine Reserve near Arinaga, Gran Canaria, and represents the deepest part of the reserve. The route is typically accessed via the 'Table Top' entry point, which is less affected by northerly winds than the alternative approach.
The dive follows an undersea cliff at 10–15 m before descending past a field of garden eels to an area of large boulders at around 20 m, where morays are commonly found. Continuing deeper, the route reaches the 'campo de gorgonia' at 30 m — a notable gorgonian field that includes one specimen over 2 m wide, along with smaller red and yellow sea fans. A hidden cave sits at 22 m, and an optional shallower plan allows divers to turn around at the triggerfish zone at 20 m.
In clear conditions, the shallower cliff section holds tuna, barracuda, trumpetfish, and grouper. Deeper down, marbled electric rays, gilt-headed bream, angel sharks, triggerfish, abade, and large shoals of boga are regularly seen. Around the sea fans, look for flabellina nudibranch, and in spring rubios may appear. Manta rays, hammerhead sharks, and turtles have been reported here over the years.
This is a long dive planned as a decompression dive, making it suitable only for advanced divers with prior experience of currents and strong air management. The site is protected from exposure, with medium current and good visibility.
