Rainbow Reef is a large, oblong, saddle-shaped seamount located in the Russell Islands, Solomon Islands. The reef is covered with fans, soft corals, and sponges, and sits in open ocean, with its shallowest point at 55 feet (roughly 16.8 m) and no shallower section above that.
As an open-ocean seamount, Rainbow Reef attracts pelagic and schooling species including sharks, mobula rays, and schooling barracuda, while the reef structure itself is densely populated with Pink Square Anthias. Photographers working wide-angle will find abundant reef-scape compositions, and on sunny days the depth and water clarity make sunburst shots a natural option.
Water clarity at this site is normally excellent, and the open-ocean setting means the full seamount structure is visible in good conditions. The dive tends to run short relative to how much is happening across the reef, so managing bottom time against the minimum depth of 55 feet is worth planning for before descent.
