Sahaung is a rock pinnacle at the southern tip of Bangka Island, off North Sulawesi, and the most iconic dive site of the Bangka archipelago. It is known for pristine soft corals and rock formations that look like an underwater Giant's Causeway. Large rocks break the surface, and the dominant eastern swell crashes over them.
The dive is made with the current, shallowing as you go around the pinnacle. There is usually a noticeable surge underwater, sometimes two metres each way, so keep your distance from the reef until you reach a more sheltered area. Near the end the pinnacle rises from the reef in a step-like formation, and juvenile whitetip reef sharks rest around its base among table corals, which makes it a good place for a safety stop.
Large gorgonian sea fans hold pygmy seahorses, and on a good day three species can be found in a single dive. Coral guard crabs shelter in the staghorn coral on the shallower slope, and many mantis shrimp burrow in the sand. Blacktip reef sharks are common sightings, and schools of bumphead parrotfish often charge through, leaving trails of sand behind them.
