Simons Reef is a deep reef dive site located north-east of Gili Meno in the Gili Islands, Indonesia, and is considered one of the area's premier advanced dives. The site reaches a maximum depth of 40 metres and is characterised by a dramatic underwater landscape of large coral bommies and sea mounds rising up from a sandy bottom, separated by numerous canyons and corridors. Overhangs, outcrops, and sand formations reminiscent of desert dunes add further variety to the terrain, and the dive typically ends on a pinnacle covered in fish life. The shallower sections of the site provide a suitable area for a safety stop.
The coral bommies and sea mounds host a notably varied mix of corals not commonly seen at other local sites, along with large gorgonian sea fans that create habitat for macro critters. Currents running through the canyons draw in schools of oriental sweetlips and other reef fish, as well as hunting predators including tuna, barracuda, jacks, and reef sharks. Nitrox is well suited to this site, as it allows divers to extend bottom time at depth.
The site is recommended for divers holding at least a PADI Advanced Open Water certification, or those undertaking that course, given the depth and the currents that move through it. Simons Reef is consistently listed among the best deep and best advanced dives in the Gili Islands, alongside other sites such as Shark Point, Deep Halik, Deep Turbo, and Takat Malang.
