Tanote Bay is a bay dive on Koh Tao, Thailand, known for the large rock that sits in the middle of the bay a short swim from shore, a favourite spot for rock jumping. It suits both scuba divers and freedivers.
A gentle slope runs down past 20 metres, with natural and artificial reefs to explore, and depths run from 2 to 18 metres. Hard and soft corals, large barrel sponges, boulder corals and brain corals shelter many reef fish. Butterflyfish, angelfish, anemonefish, sea turtles and stingrays are common, along with hundreds of yellowtail barracuda and titan triggerfish. Pipefish, cleaner shrimp and spider crabs reward a macro look, and juvenile blacktip reef sharks can be found in the shallows at the right time of year.
A sunken catamaran lies on sand at 18 metres just off the main site, with a Jenkins whipray sometimes resting under it, banded pipefish along the structure and a small frogfish in the nooks. A sunken scooter nearby is guarded by an aggressive damselfish, so give it room. Concrete cubes, reef balls and coral nursery structures sit at around 10 metres, and the cubes are full of coral and life in their cracks and crevices.
