The Great White Wall is the signature dive of Rainbow Reef, located in the Somosomo Strait between Taveuni Island and Vanua Levu in Fiji. The reef is widely regarded as the soft coral capital of the world, and this site is its top draw — a sheer wall blanketed in white soft coral (Dendronephthya) that stretches some 200 feet (61 m) across and drops to around 150 feet (45 m). Entry to the wall is made through a coral-encrusted swim-through that leads from the reef top out onto the open-ocean face, where the wall is exposed to the full force of oceanic currents and nutrient-rich water that sustains its remarkable coral growth.
The reef top above the swim-through hosts a dense concentration of colour and life, including red gorgonian fans, crinoids, additional soft corals, fairy basslets, square-spot anthiases, big-eye soldierfish, squirrelfish, and lionfish. On the open-ocean wall and in the blue water beyond, divers regularly encounter sharks, moray eels, and manta rays, the latter most reliably between May and November. Schools of Spanish mackerel and giant tuna pass through in open water, and Napoleon wrasse are also seen on the wall face.
Conditions at the Great White Wall are strongly tide-dependent. The site sits in the current-swept Somosomo Strait but benefits from the shelter of Taveuni Island and protection from south-easterly trade winds. The recommended entry window is roughly one hour before low tide on a falling tide, diving as the outgoing current ceases — slack water is essential for a safe and comfortable dive. Visibility is generally excellent, and water temperature ranges from 25–29 °C across the year. Downcurrents can be encountered on the wall face, making precise buoyancy control critical throughout the dive.
The Great White Wall is rated advanced (Level 3) and is not suitable for beginners. The narrow swim-through, strong and variable currents, potential downcurrents, and the depth of the wall all demand solid buoyancy skills and current-diving experience. Boat access from nearby Taveuni resorts is straightforward, with the site only a short distance from shore.
