About this site
Abu Nuhas is a submerged reef in the Red Sea just north of Shadwan Island, which has claimed more vessels than any other reef in the Red Sea. Depths run from 5 to 32 metres and the dive is rated advanced.
At least four complete wrecks lie here. The Chrisoula K sank on a voyage from Bombay to Suez and now holds swaying curtains of glassfish. The Carnatic, which sank in stormy weather on the same route, is widely seen as the most beautiful wreck on the reef, covered in glassfish with groupers, lionfish and jackfish living in it. The Giannis D, bound for Jeddah from Croatia, was lost here in 1983. It is also exposed to the elements and has scorpionfish, batfish and free-swimming eels. The Kimon M is another wreck on the reef.
Hard and soft corals grow on the reef itself.
