Awas Reef is a sandy muck site located off the south side of Mabul Island, Malaysia. The bottom is a sandy slope that runs from 5 metres down to a maximum of around 15–16.5 metres, and divers follow mooring blocks and an old sunken rope along the descent.
The reef's signature subjects are flamboyant cuttlefish (Metasepia pfefferi) and black-finned snake eels, which are the main reasons divers seek it out. The barren sandy background makes isolating small subjects straightforward, and photographers find the site well suited to snoot lighting — a narrow light beam eliminates the plain sand and places subjects against a black background. A 60 mm or 105 mm macro lens works best here; wide-angle lenses pick up suspended silt and produce heavy backscatter.
Conditions are easy: current is light and the water is warm, which lets divers relax and work on buoyancy control rather than fighting the environment. The site suits Open Water divers, though good fin technique is essential — a flutter kick stirs up silt and ruins visibility for everyone behind you, so a frog kick and a hands-free hover above the sand are required. Visibility is generally good, with the best conditions running from March to October; the shoulder months of mid-February and mid-November offer slightly softer visibility.
Access is by boat from Mabul. Because the slope is shallow and current-free, the site also lends itself to dusk and night dives, when nocturnal macro life becomes active.
