Bunutan is a boat dive in Amed, east Bali, with a view of Mount Agung and lush hills on the ride out. It is called an easy deep dive and is rated for experienced divers, with depths reaching around 40 metres.
The dive starts on a sandy bottom with a colony of garden eels, then the slope steepens and a current carries you east. The current ranges from mild to strong. Reef at up to 30 metres is in good health and has gigantic barrel sponges. Midway the slope eases and has fewer corals, which is where barracuda, reef sharks and giant trevally gather. Blacktip reef sharks are sometimes seen, and there are blue-spotted stingrays on the sand, octopus and ribbon eels. Pygmy seahorses live on the deep reef at 40 metres.
Towards the end, giant porites mounds, giant gorgonians and table corals draw plenty of fish for the safety stop, and a sea turtle may pass. Visibility is generally excellent.
