Catterthun is a big wreck about 3 km north east of Seal Rocks, lying at 48 to 52 metres. The hull is blanketed by red sponge, gorgonian fans and black coral.
There are nearly always sharks of some type on the wreck, and bronze whalers and hammerheads are common. Schools of kingfish, jewfish and snapper gather here too. Visibility is highly variable, from murky to very clear and rarely in between.
The strong current is the biggest hazard, and a diver who loses the anchor line can surface a long way from the boat. Artefacts remain on the wreck, including horse bones in the bow and passenger jewellery.
