Dalkey Island lies at the south end of Dublin Bay, with Dalkey Sound running between the island and the mainland. The Sound is the best choice when diving on or near slack is not possible, because the tide flies through it and makes an exciting drift dive. The bottom runs from around 10 to 20 m and is mostly sand with the odd rocky outcrop, graded for Ocean Divers.
Crabs and dogfish are plentiful, and in summer the bottom is often covered in a mass of brittlestars. Currents here can reach 4 knots, with a rip off the fort point on the ebb and a flood current east of the island. Lobster pots with lines are a hazard, and it gets dark below 20 m.
