Laughing Bird Caye is a tiny island about 18 kilometres (11 miles) offshore from Placencia in Belize, set in a protected marine environment as part of Laughing Bird Caye National Park. It sits on a reef formation called a faro, which has steep drop-offs and a central lagoon.
The island took its name from the laughing gulls that once used it as a breeding site. The northern side is a slope that runs from about 8 metres to 27 metres (25 to 90 feet). This is a beginner dive, and divers have reported turtles, rays and nurse sharks around the reef.
