Long Caye Wall is a vertical wall dive on the east side of Glover's Reef Atoll, Belize, where the seafloor drops from a shallow sandy plateau to more than 2,000 feet (660 m) into open water.
The dive begins on a broad field of bright white sand at 40 feet (12 m), which forms the top of the wall. As you move toward the edge, coral grows in large chunky formations out of the sand bottom, and narrow sand channels run like small rivers down through the coral into mini canyons. The wall itself runs the full length of the sandy area, and once you crest it the depth falls away sharply, giving a strong sense of open space below.
The sandy plateau is home to southern stingrays and garden eels, which can be watched retreating into their holes on the descent. The wall and sand channels also hold short-nose batfish, spiny lobsters, arrow crabs, Creole wrasse, parrotfish, spotted eagle rays, hawksbill turtles, barrel sponges, blacktip sharks, juvenile spotted drums, and Caribbean coral and sponge communities.
This is a boat dive on the east side of the atoll, with visibility routinely exceeding 100 feet (30 m). Current is light. The dive is rated as a technical difficulty level, and the remote atoll location — about 1.5 hours by boat — means divers should be comfortable and self-sufficient in the water.
