Lutoban North is a shallow seagrass bed that lies beside a coral reef. In 2025 an aggregation of approximately 800 rabbitfish fry was seen swimming in and out of the grass, and most of the fish living in the meadow belong to the smallest size class, 0 to 5 cm, which makes it an important nursery for juveniles.
Fast-moving trevallies and rainbow runners patrol the blades. A pair of huge adult longface emperors was seen swimming slowly and closely together, behaviour that suggests they may have been courting.
