Malaga Cove is a beach dive in South Bay, California, with a thick, healthy kelp forest over a rocky structure. The water is shallow and there is little to no current, which makes it a popular site, though the entry makes it a step up from a beginner dive.
From the path you can choose the rocky boulders, which are a moderate entry and only for divers with rocky entry experience, or the sandy beach, which is easy. Beginners should enter from the sandy beach and surface swim out to the reef. Apply a surf entry that suits the conditions, and expect a strenuous climb back up to the parking lot. The best time to dive is during small north and northwest swells at high tide.
Garibaldi, senoritas, blacksmith, kelp bass, sheephead and blue-banded gobies live in the kelp. Large bat rays, horn sharks, angel sharks, octopus, barracuda and various baitfish also visit, though some are seasonal.
