Mauan (also written Mawan) is a small island and secondary manta cleaning station in Central Komodo, located near the more famous Manta Point (Karang Makassar). It offers longer and often closer manta encounters away from the crowds that can gather at that main site, making it a quieter option for photographers and divers seeking space around the rays.
The reef surrounds the island and drops to 18–20 metres, with the typical dive conducted between 10 and 18 metres. Two primary manta cleaning stations sit within the site, where rays circle in a predictable pattern. Sandy slopes and coral ridges break up the terrain, and the intervals between manta passes are filled with coral gardens holding pastel soft corals and bright sponges.
Manta rays are the headline attraction, with the best sightings on a rising tide; they are present year-round, with peak congregations reported from December through March. Hawksbill turtles, cuttlefish, bamboo sharks, leaf scorpionfish, and mantis shrimp are also regularly seen, and divers who search the coral structure carefully turn up hairy shrimp and ornate ghost pipefish.
Conditions are generally milder than at Manta Point, but currents strengthen considerably during new and full moon phases and must be treated with respect. The site suits confident Open Water divers who are comfortable following a guide in moderate to strong current; manta etiquette applies — stay low to the substrate, keep a respectful distance, and do not chase the rays.
