About this site

Moon Hole is a reef dive site on Utila, named for a large, round sandy crater at its centre, surrounded by shallow coral reef. The maximum depth in the sand crater reaches 35 feet (about 11 metres), while the verified maximum depth of the site overall is 18.3 metres. The surrounding coral reef provides shelter and structure across the site, with sand patches interspersed throughout.

The reef holds a large variety of crustaceans and octopus, which are characteristic finds among the coral and sand. The site is suited to intermediate-level divers.

Crossing over the western wall and heading south connects Moon Hole to Ron's Wreck, a small fishing boat resting at around 60 feet (18 metres), set within a U-shaped reef wall over a gently sloping sandy bottom.
