Pipeline sits on Port Stephens, a large natural harbour on the New South Wales coast north of Newcastle, with dive sites in the area typically reached by boat from Nelson Bay's marinas out toward the bay's headlands and offshore islands. Divers here have reported a varied mix of macro life, including Australian blue dragons, clown doris, pancake aphelodoris, and splendid goniobranch nudibranchs, alongside mourning cuttlefish, eastern red scorpionfish, bigeye snapper, common stingarees, and White's seahorses. The site's character owes much to its sheltered position within the bay, which tends to favour smaller, slower-moving reef creatures over open-water pelagics.
