Puerto Morelos Reef is a coral reef located approximately 30 minutes from Cancún, within the National Reef Park, situated very close to the coast near the area known as Ojo de Agua. The reef is part of a CONANP-regulated protected zone, and entry to the snorkel area is not permitted without a licensed cooperative guide; visitors must wear a flotation vest, observe a 45-minute water time limit, and maintain at least 3 m distance from turtles, with fines applicable to both unlicensed guides and guests.
The reef reaches a maximum depth of 6 m, making it well suited to beginner divers and snorkellers, and features healthy, flourishing coral formations with notably high reef-fish density compared to neighbouring sites. The bottom type is reef, and the site is largely insulated from sargassum that affects more exposed, shore-entry locations along the Riviera Maya.
Marine life at the site includes queen angelfish, French angelfish, sergeant major, blue tang, stoplight parrotfish, spotted drum, nurse shark, turtle, barracuda, snappers, rays, eagle rays, lionfish, and lobsters. Water temperature ranges from 26–29°C year-round, visibility is good, and there is no significant current, adding to the site's accessibility for less experienced divers.
