Punta Negra is the first dive along the outside reef of Cancun, Mexico, in the Mesoamerican barrier reef system. The maximum depth is 16 m (52 ft), and Open Water is the minimum certification. The outside reefs here sit in 15 to 17 m, and the reef is a good place for drift dives.
Barracuda, stingrays and schools of snapper are common. Currents are usually calm, but depending on the season the dive can turn into a drift with moderate current. The exposed shoreline can bring challenging conditions with open seas. Water temperature is 24 to 29°C.
