Richelieu Rock is a horseshoe of limestone pinnacles in the Surin Islands, 14 kilometres east of Koh Surin Nua, which looks like a croissant from above. The shallower southern side contrasts with a deeper northern section that drops to about 30 metres, and scattered pinnacles surround the main rock over a bottom of rubble and sand. At low tide the rock peaks about a metre above the surface, and at high tide it disappears.
Tigertail seahorses, ornate ghost pipefish and harlequin shrimp live in the limestone cracks and caves, while huge schools of barracuda, giant trevally, rainbow runners and long-nose emperor fish gather around the pinnacles. Soft corals and anemones cover the rock in colour. Whale sharks are an occasional visitor, mostly from February to mid-May.
The currents run from weak to strong and the structure is complex in three dimensions, so the site calls for intermediate to advanced skills.
