Upolu Cay is a reef site on the Great Barrier Reef near Cairns. A colourful coral garden stands out against the surrounding patches of white coral sand, and the depth is around 10 metres, shifting a little with the tide. The water is protected.
Stingrays hide under the sand between the coral, and green turtles can be watched feeding. Parrotfish graze on algae, coral trout hang lazily among the heads, and many smaller reef fish dart in and out of the coral. The turtles are used to divers and may swim close, so the best approach is to move slowly alongside them without touching, chasing or harassing them.
