The USS Lanikai is a wreck in Nabasan Bay in the Philippines, lying scattered at 36 metres. Much of the structure is still recognisable and attracts a lot of marine life. Local divers rediscovered her in 2003, and she is one of the less frequently visited sites because there is no buoy marker. It is a dive for advanced, deep and technical divers.
The wreck is steeped in history. She was a schooner-rigged diesel yacht built in 1914 and originally named the MV Hermes, sold to German owners. She was at dock in Honolulu at the start of the First World War, so she was confiscated into US Navy service by executive order and renamed the USS Hermes. She was sold and renamed Lanikai in October 1926, passed through several owners, and in 1937 was sold to a film company for the movie The Hurricane. After filming she stayed in use as the studio's yacht until being sold to a stevedoring company in Manila.
