White Island is an island and reef on the south coast of the Otago Peninsula, New Zealand, which extends toward Green Island. It is a boat dive, about 5 minutes by boat from Smaill's or Tomahawk Beach. Sea life is prolific, depths run to 25 m, and visibility is 5 to 15 m. It is suitable for novices and beyond, though it is listed as advanced, and divers going deep should have at least five deep cold-water dives. A surface marker is a must.
The south coast of the peninsula is very exposed to large swells from a variety of directions, so check the weather before heading out. Listed hazards are depth, currents, entanglement, remoteness, seasickness, exposure to weather and boat traffic.
