Ancoras is an underwater archaeological site in the bay of Angra do Heroismo on Terceira in the Azores, inside the bay's Underwater Archaeological Park. The seabed holds a wide range of anchors and cannon whose styles run from the 16th century to the 20th century.
They record anchoring mistakes by pilots unfamiliar with the volcanic bottom of the bay, and desperate manoeuvres by ships in trouble that cut their cables to escape the dangerous south and southeast winds. Some of the iron is heavily encrusted and hard to identify.
Access is by boat only. There are no strong currents, but the site lies within the harbour zone of Porto das Pipas, so watch for vessel traffic.
