Castle Rock is a submerged seamount sitting in open water north of Komodo Island, exposed on all sides to the currents that sweep through the region. The rock itself is the attraction: a hard, rocky structure dived from around 15 m (50 ft) down to 40 m (130 ft), with the top of the seamount serving as the main gathering point for divers.
The site draws large pelagic species in numbers, with giant trevallies, barracuda, dogtooth tuna, white-tip reef sharks, and grey reef sharks all regularly encountered, along with dense schools of fusiliers moving through the blue water column above and around the rock.
Currents here run strong to very strong, and the site is rated advanced. The recommended technique is a negative entry to descend quickly, followed by deploying a reef hook at the top of the rock to hold position and watch the action. Slack tide is the right window to dive; the best season runs from April to November. Divers should stay alert to current changes throughout the dive.
