Le Grec (real name Sagona) is the wreck of a small cargo ship that sank east of Porquerolles island, in the Hyères archipelago, on 3 December 1945 — barely three weeks after the nearby Donator sinking — when it struck a drifting mine while carrying barrels of wine. The explosion cut the ship in half and she went down almost immediately.
The wreck lies in two parts at depths between 35 and 45 metres, with the central section — including the chimney and stern — sitting upright on the keel, and the bow resting about 60 metres further out on the sandy bottom. The interior, holds, superstructures and passageways are all accessible and worth exploring, with corals having colonised virtually every surface of the structure.
Marine life on Le Grec is prolific: gorgonians spread across the wreck, and dentex and groupers are regularly encountered among the corals and in the passageways.
The dive requires an experienced certification level — CMAS 2-star (equivalent to the French Level 3) — reflecting the depth and the technical nature of penetrating a wreck in two sections at up to 45 metres.
