The Helmet Wreck is a Japanese transport ship in Palau, lying along the slope of the seabed at depths of 15 to 35 m. It is easy to reach, with no current, and AOW with nitrox is recommended. Visibility is 5 to 20 m, and poorer in the rainy season or on an ebbing tide.
At the bow, 10 to 15 m down, many objects from the ship still lie around, including pots, kitchen knives, a cannon, pistols and bottles. Following the hull down you can circle the bottom of the ship at the deepest point, in the 30s of metres. The large decks and holds make for an unusual dive.
Penetrating the wreck is technical diving, and unexploded ordnance, mines and shell casings from the war may still be present, so do not touch anything. Corroded steel can have sharp edges.
