Magic Reef is a reef dive site in the Nungwi area of north Zanzibar, divided into three small interconnected reefs that sit between 10 and 20 metres depth, with a sandy slope extending to around 22 metres for those who venture deeper.
The terrain rewards slow, methodical exploration — a diver rarely covers more than a few metres without pausing to examine something. The reef structure is riddled with holes and crevices, and sponges are a notable feature of the deeper sandy slope. The site is well suited to intermediate divers, and a mild current means the preferred technique is to drift slowly along the reef, peering into every gap.
Magic Reef is particularly renowned for camouflage specialists and macro subjects. Frogfish are found on the sponges of the deeper slope, while leaf fish, scorpionfish, weedy scorpionfish, crocodile fish, and Mauritius scorpionfish blend into the reef throughout. Octopuses and mantis shrimp inhabit the holes, seahorses and nudibranchs appear regularly, and cuttlefish, moray eels, cleaner shrimp, and ribbon eels round out the species list. Turtles are occasionally encountered resting beside barrel sponges.
The site is a favourite among underwater photographers precisely because of the density and variety of cryptic creatures packed into a relatively compact area. Average water temperature in the wider Nungwi region runs around 26 °C.
