Mata Cut is a pass through the barrier reef, a few miles north of Punta Arena Canyons. The water is shallow, at about 2.4 to 4.9 metres (8 to 16 feet), and the remains of an old barge known as Changa's Wreck lie just inside the reef in less than 3 metres (10 ft) of water, making it a good place to combine fish and wreck photography.
Even on calm days, ocean swells passing through the cut create mild currents and wave surge. Conditions get significantly worse when the prevailing northeasterly winds are strong, and the surge then scours the sandy bottom and fills the water with sediment.
