Mushrooms sits among the small islands of the Vava'u group in northern Tonga, in the sheltered channels and limestone terrain typical of this archipelago, and is reached by a short boat ride from Neiafu, the main town. Divers here have reported a varied reef fish community including Bleeker's parrotfish, brown tang, coral damselfish, flagtail triggerfish, humbug dascyllus, Indian bullethead parrotfish, lined bristletooth, manybar goatfish, princess damsel, and yellowbar parrotfish. The site's name suggests the kind of mushroom-shaped limestone formations common to Vava'u's underwater topography, carved by the same geology that shapes the islands above the waterline.
