Oil Rig Eureka is a decommissioned offshore oil platform dive site located in Southern California, dived year-round as an open-sea, live-boat operation. The platform structure descends to a maximum depth of 219.5 m (720 ft), with divers reporting that the water clarity improves noticeably at around 45 m (150 ft), and large white plumose anemones (Metridiums) become prominent at the deeper levels.
Conditions at Eureka reflect its open-ocean setting: currents are medium-strength but unpredictable, thermoclines are common, and algae blooms can reduce visibility at times, though visibility is generally good. Surge and limited visibility can develop without warning, and the effectively bottomless nature of the structure adds a psychological and practical challenge. Live-boating is required for entry and exit, meaning there is no fixed mooring and divers must manage their return to a moving or holding vessel.
The site suits advanced divers comfortable with open-sea conditions, strong currents, and deep water. It is well regarded by underwater photographers and sightseers owing to the structural complexity of the rig and the marine life it attracts, including mola mola, sharks, rays, sardines, mackerel, barracuda, sea lions, dolphins, jellyfish, cormorants, starfish, Garibaldi, rockfish, sheephead, and opaleye.
