Punta Sur, also known as Punta Sur / Devil's Throat, is an advanced reef and cave dive located at the southern end of Cozumel's Marine Park. The site is best known for the Devil's Throat, a cave system that enters at around 80 to 90 feet (24 to 27 m) and exits on the open wall at 130 feet (40 m) or deeper, placing it at the outer edge of recreational diving limits. The Punta Sur Cathedral section, the southernmost point in the Marine Park, features large swim-throughs leading into open water and is only accessible on days with calm weather and good sea conditions.
The terrain combines a cave or overhead environment with an open wall dropping to maximum depth, giving the site its reputation as the signature advanced dive in Cozumel. The depth range runs from 60 to 130 feet (18 to 40 m). The combination of the overhead environment inside the cave system, significant depth, and consistently strong current makes this a serious undertaking requiring careful planning and solid dive skills.
Current at Punta Sur can run hard, driven by the Yucatan Current that flows north along Cozumel's western coast. Visibility is consistently excellent, regularly exceeding 100 feet (30 m) and reaching 150 feet (46 m) or more on clear days. Water temperature ranges from around 75°F (24°C) in winter to 84°F (29°C) in summer. The site is weather-dependent and may be inaccessible in rough sea conditions; it is reached by boat.
Advanced Open Water certification is the minimum requirement for this site. The overhead environment, depth, and strong current place it firmly in the technical category, and divers should be fully comfortable with drift diving and deep diving before attempting it.
