Ras Umm Sid is a wall and plateau site at the corner of the bay in Sharm el Sheikh, north of Temple. It is known for its gorgonian forest, and schools of barracuda are characteristic of the site.
The wall runs from the surface to 18 metres and forms a plateau that extends about 50 metres to the drop-off. Pinnacles on the plateau hold scorpionfish camouflaged in the coral and hovering batfish, and blue-spotted stingrays rest on the sand. The highlight is a column of gorgonian fans from 14 to 28 metres. Elsewhere the dive ends on a plateau at 15 metres that shallows to 5 metres.
At the far corner, where currents meet, you may see schools of snappers and barracuda and large Napoleon wrasse. The other side has one of the best coral gardens in Sharm, with small pinnacles of soft coral, nudibranchs and devil scorpionfish. Some pelagics can be seen in spring.
The site gets strong currents and they can be tricky, so it is usually dived as a drift. It is one of the few Sharm el Sheikh sites that can also be reached from the shore.
