The Big Blue lies within Rangiroa's atoll system in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia, one of the largest atolls in the world, where the lagoon meets the open Pacific through passes such as Tiputa and Avatoru. Tidal exchange through these channels shapes conditions across the surrounding dive sites, and Rangiroa serves as a base for exploring this stretch of the Tuamotus a short flight from Tahiti. Divers at this site have reported common bottlenose dolphins moving through the area, along with giant moray, humpback snapper, masked bannerfish, Napoleon wrasse, paletail unicornfish, raccoon butterflyfish, and titan triggerfish.
