The Thunderbolt is an intentionally sunk, 188-foot (57-metre) cable layer ship about 7 miles south of Marathon in the Florida Keys. It sits upright on the seafloor, with its wheelhouse and upper deck about 35 feet (11 metres) below the surface. It is a member of the Florida Keys Shipwreck Trail.
The wreck has become an artificial reef, and with the natural coral growth it attracts a rich variety of marine life. Schools of colourful fish and corals cover the structure, and large resident goliath groupers lurk around it. It is less crowded than the natural reefs and popular with underwater photographers.
