Toyapakeh is a drift dive along a channel on the northwest coast of Nusa Penida, where powerful currents funnel nutrient-rich water through the strait. When the current is running, you drop in, find your depth and the current carries you, with the reef wall on one side and open blue water on the other.
Large schools of fusiliers and surgeonfish hang in the water column, and trevally and barracuda patrol the edges. Reef sharks appear now and then in the deeper sections, and hawksbill turtles rest on the coral. The hard coral gardens are in good condition, and visibility is often 20 to 25 m.
The current can change quickly. It is not a site for first-time divers or recent beginners, and around 20 logged dives and some experience in moving water is a reasonable benchmark. The dry season, roughly May to October, tends to bring cleaner water.
