Vertigo is a wall dive on the northwest side of Yap, Micronesia. Because it faces that side of the island it is protected from the wind, so it can be dived most of the time. It is a short run through the German channel to reach it.
The wall is mainly hard coral and drops away seemingly without end, with the open blue on the other side. Visibility is endless, easily over 100 feet (30 metres), and the deep blue colour draws the eye.
Sharks are the main draw. Grey reef, blacktip and whitetip sharks are the regular visitors, and silky sharks and scalloped hammerheads have also been seen. A dive can start with nothing in sight and then one, two and over a dozen sharks appear and move in for a closer look. A grouper of around 10 feet (3 metres) in length lurks deep down.
Thousands of colourful tropical fish live near the surface, so the dive mixes reef life with the sharks.
