Andro is a 160-foot luxury yacht wreck resting on a sandy bottom off the Florida Atlantic coast, lying with her bow on her starboard side at a maximum depth of 21.3 metres (70 feet) and a shallowest profile of roughly 11.5 metres (38 feet). Built in 1926, she was owned by amateur marine biologist Harry P. Bingham and used for deep-sea trawling expeditions to the Pacific coast of Central America and the Gulf of California; a taxidermist's room and laboratory occupied her main deck. Her last expeditions ran to the Bahamas and Bermuda in 1927, during which over 3,000 specimens — around 200 previously unknown — were collected and donated to Yale University. She was later converted into a submarine-chasing patrol boat during World War II, then served as an Atlantic coast freighter before being seized by Customs for carrying 15 tons of marijuana. Scuttled in 1985, she retains twin propellers, two smokestacks, and a large wheelhouse.
Hurricane Andrew in 1992 broke the wreck into three sections and exposed the engine block, adding variety to the exploration and creating considerable twisted metal throughout the site. The 38-foot relief means divers can work multiple depth ranges on a single dive, moving through the wheelhouse, around the smokestacks, and into the more open sections where the hull fractured. The wreck is considered an intermediate-level dive and is well regarded for underwater photography.
Sea life has re-established itself extensively across the structure. Red gorgonians encrust the metalwork, goliath groupers are resident, and a range of pelagic species pass through. Lobsters and turtles are also recorded at the site, along with tropical fish throughout the wreck.
