About this site
Beacon Rock is the nearest point of Sha'ab Mahmud reef to Sharm el Sheikh, on the western coast of South Sinai, and is the site of the wreck of the Dunraven. It is often visited by day boats, while the full length of the reef is more usually explored from a liveaboard.
The Dunraven was a British merchant ship built in Newcastle in 1873. She sank on 22 April 1876. The wreck lies close to the reef wall and slopes down to 29.5 m on a sandy bottom. It was found by accident in 1977, and a BBC dramatised documentary that year told the story of her last voyage.
The dive ends on the reef. At the southern end of the reef there is a coral garden at 8 to 5 m, which makes a spectacular place to finish the dive. The Dunraven is a very popular wreck site.
