Breakers' Cutback is a wall site on the East End of Grand Cayman, in the Frank Sound area, offshore from the lighthouse. It is the farthest of the regular south-side dives, about 35 minutes by boat from the dock. The mooring pin sits at 59 ft (18 m) and the maximum depth is 100 ft (30.5 m).
The wall here genuinely overhangs, and swimming underneath the drop-off is part of the dive. Descending to at least 80 ft (24 m) is recommended to see it. The shadowy ceiling carries sponges in all shapes, sizes and colours, hanging from rocky crevices on all sides including directly overhead. A dive light is essential to see their true colours.
A short swim west of the pin brings you to the cutback itself. The wall turns abruptly inland at a right angle, which creates an optical illusion as if part of the wall has been deleted. The sharp vertical line where reef meets open blue makes for good photos.
Around the cutback, look up to see schools of fish silhouetted against the sunlight, including large groups of creole wrasse. Looking down may reward you with black jacks, which make close passes and are easy to watch.
