About this site
Bunaken Timur lies on the east side of Bunaken Island in Bunaken National Park. The reef is very long and shares its structure with Pangalisan, too long to cover in one dive. The tides drive the currents, so it makes an excellent drift dive.
The shallows have healthy soft coral that serves as a nursery for juvenile reef fish, so guides often spend much of the dive at 10 m. The walls hold more kinds of nudibranch than the rest of Bunaken, including many Chromodoris species, Coryphellina exoptata and Nembrotha. Ascidians, spotted eagle rays, turtles, shrimpfish, butterflyfish and sharks are common, and it is a special site for macro photography.
