About this site
The Aaron Ward was a United States Navy destroyer sunk in Iron Bottom Sound off Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands during World War II, torpedoed by Japanese aircraft in April 1943 after earlier being damaged in combat around the island. It now rests on the seabed in the waters of Central Province, part of the dense cluster of wartime wrecks that gives Iron Bottom Sound its name. The wreck lies in a region known for deep, current-affected water where the strait between Guadalcanal, Savo, and Florida Islands became a graveyard for numerous ships and aircraft during the Guadalcanal campaign.
